CHENNAI: A laboratory to facilitate forensic examination of data in various computer-related crimes has been proposed in the Greater Chennai police's cyber cell, Police Commissioner R. Nataraj said on Wednesday.
Computer security
An Assistant Commissioner of Police trained in computer security will head the cell, Mr. Nataraj said at a guest lecture on "cyber crimes," organised at the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Citing instances of computer crimes and the laws relating to the offences, the Commissioner said crimes on the Internet were a big challenge to the police. There was need for a greater awareness and security consciousness among people to prevent such incidents. According to 2004 statistics, there were 70-lakh personal computers and 23 million Internet connections in the country. The city police had received complaints from banks and other financial institutions and commercial, industrial or trading companies. Recently, there were complaints that popular movies were being hosted on websites.
Cameras at ATMs
Detailing the steps taken by the police to detect computer-assisted crimes, Mr. Nataraj said the police now insisted that surveillance cameras should be installed at ATMs when they were being set up. Mr. Nataraj advised the public, particularly youngsters, to be cautious when chatting with unknown people on the Internet. But the police were not able to block some websites found to be objectionable, he said.
