HYDERABAD: Making a strong plea for protecting open spaces and building more parks and playgrounds in the twin cities, Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao has urged the Government to ensure that sports facilities are accessible to the general public, especially youth. "The city is growing at a rapid pace but see that enough space is earmarked for parks and playgrounds. Sports should be encouraged," he told a gathering of public representatives and officials here on Wednesday. Mr. Rao laid the foundation stone for an international standard swimming pool at Amberpet Police Lines and set a year's deadline for completion here on Wednesday. It was a long-standing dream of the Congress leader for which he had donated Rs. 30 lakhs from his MP fund. Mayor T. Krishna Reddy announced at the function that the MCH would pitch in with Rs. 1 crore. Minister for Municipal Administration K. Ranga Rao said that the Government is committed to looking after the city needs and the Greater Hyderabad proposal is in that direction. "There need not be any apprehension as it is aimed at helping in integrated development of the capital," he said. Earlier, MCH Commissioner Sanjay Jaju said Rs. 1 crore is being spent under phase one and another Rs. 1crore was needed for its next phase. The pool complex will have separate rooms for coaches, men and women plus a para-medical unit. The corporation had spent Rs. 1.64 crores for indoor stadium, pavilion and outdoor stadium in the area.
