MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday opined that higher police officials within its jurisdiction should keep track of important cases including habeas corpus petitions, which relate to personal liberty of an individual. The observation was made by a Division Bench, comprising Justice P.K. Misra and A.R. Ramalingam, towards the Tirunelveli City Commissioner of Police, who appeared before the Bench to explain the delay in tracing a woman, missing since March 2003. The Bench said that it had come across a few cases where the police had been prolonging the matter without any concrete outcome. It also pointed out that the Tirunelveli case had been adjourned on many occasions on the request of the investigating officer. Later, when the Bench asked the Commissioner whether he was kept informed of the proceedings, the official replied in the negative. He said that he took charge a few months back and the case was brought to his knowledge only recently. However, the Division Bench granted a month's time to the police to complete the probe pursuant to the assurance given by the officer that the investigating team had of late received some significant clues.
