This Day That Age
The Governments of India and China are expected to appoint an officer each to go into the question of the "ownership" of the Hoti area - an uninhabited mountainous part in the Garhwal area on the Indo-Tibetan border, it was learnt in New Delhi on November 9. Along the demarcated line of the Indo-Chinese border, which includes the Tibet region of China, there are a number of armed outposts of both China and India on their respective sides. Some of the outposts are said to be seasonal. For a few months in a year a small picket of armed constabulary is posted there and, during winter, the picket is withdrawn. The Hoti area, according to the Government of India, lies south of the demarcated line, which is roughly south of the various passes mentioned in the Sino-Indian treaty over Tibet entered into last year. Year before last there was a small Indian picket in the Hoti region. Last year no pickets were sent to man this uninhabited, mountainous and rocky region. This year a few Chinese pickets were observed in the area and the question was taken up with Peking. Two officers will now be appointed to investigate the position.
