MASSIVE PROJECT: Pipes stocked at a yard in a village near Saradgi in Gulbarga district
GULBARGA: The work on the World Bank-assisted $19 million Karnataka Urban Water and Sanitation Sector Improvement Project to improve the existing drinking water supply schemes in three city corporation areas of Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwad and Gulbarga was formally inaugurated here on Thursday. The agency entrusted with the responsibility of laying the pipeline from Saradgi Barrage across the Bhima started the earthwork for laying the new pipeline. Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board Executive Engineer Younis Pasha told The Hindu that Rs. 45.45 crores has been earmarked for Gulbarga for the comprehensive improvement of the water supply scheme from the Bhima and the Bennethora. A pilot project for providing 24-hour water supply in one demonstration zone will also be taken up. The State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the World Bank and agreed to provide its share of $2 million. Mr. Pasha said that the work of laying the new mild steel pipeline from Saradgi village to the Intermediate Pumping Station at Kotnoor covering 19.20 km has been taken up. The existing pipeline supplying water from the Bhima to the filter bed at Chorgumbaz on the outskirts of the city will be replaced with World Bank assistance. Mr. Pasha said the pipeline from the Bennethora will be repaired and improved to increase its carrying capacity and an additional 3 MGD treatment plant to substitute the existing 5.5 MGD plant at Chorgumbaz will be set up. The project also has a provision to install two addition 1,400 hp pump sets at the Saradgi Barrage and two 1,000 hp pump sets at Kotnoor. Mr. Pasha said work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2006. The work on improving and replacing the existing pipelines in the areas selected in the demonstration zone under the scheme will be taken up shortly. The areas that have been selected are Ghazipur, Swarna Nagar, Hajiwadi, Puttanigalli, Kirana Bazaar, Aiyar Wadi, Saraswati Godown, Katgarpur in Shahabazaar locality, Lal Hanuman Temple, Jagat, Sharan Nagar, parts of N.V. Layout, parts of Super Market, Public Garden.
