Right step

The CBSE directive to its affliated schools to provide free education to girl students from single child families is a step in the right direction. If India is to be a superpower, then indirect methods of population control must be encouraged by offering all kinds of incentives — financial and otherwise to single child families across the board.

The required funds can be raised through a special "national lottery" for the cause just as it is done in the U.K.

Girls are discriminated against the most in families that also have boys. They are rarely discriminated against in families with only girls or when the only child is a girl. The CBSE directive, therefore, may not help those in dire need.

The "single girl child" concept needs to be clarified further. Is a family with one girl and one or more boys eligible for the fee waiver? If no, it amounts to gross discrimination.
