KOLLAM: As part of his campaign against encroachments and illegal constructions in the city, Mayor N. Padmalochanan has identified a shop at the busy Cutcherymukku as an encroachment which is to be demolished. The Mayor said he had been receiving numerous telephone calls informing him of the encroachment. The shop has been constructed right on the footpath where commuters wait for buses. While the roof of the shop juts into the road, the shutter is on the footpath. Mr. Padmalochanan said that it was not only an encroachment but also a construction in violation of all rules. He alleged that a section of the officers at the Corporation headquarters could have received huge bribes to connive at the illegal construction. He said that for two weeks the construction of the shop was being carried out during the night. When he made enquiries about it at the Corporation office, he was told that the shop had existed there earlier and that it was only being renovated. The Mayor said that he had been living all these years close to the site in question and had never seen such a shop there earlier. He has called for files pertaining to the shop. The illegal construction is at a site where there is heavy traffic and it is a hurdle for pedestrians. It will be cleared at any cost, he said. Last week, on directions from the Mayor, an illegal restaurant right in the middle of a public lane at Taluk Cutchery Junction was cleared.
