The first consignment of spiral fin welded tubes for the Holpur Power Plant Project was despatched from BHEL, Tiruchi's Seamless Steel Tube Plant (SSTP). Ms. Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Udpadan Nigam Limited had placed the order on BHEL's SSTP for manufacture and supply of 1,750 tonnes of special grade tubes. The Deputy Chief Inspector of Boilers, BHEL, Circle, Tiruchi, K. Regunath, flagged off the consignment in the presence of the Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi complex, V. Gopalakrishnan. The General Manager, SSTP, felicitated. Dr. Gopalakrishnan handed over the despatch documents to the Additional General Manager (Materials Management and Manufacturing), G. Ramakrishna. The spiral fin welded tubes are a value-added product manufactured by a special welding process. In this steel strips are helically wound on to a base seamless steel tube by a continuous low penetration, high frequency resistance fusion welding technique. The increased surface due to the spiral fins over the tube serve to maximise heat recovery. These tubes would be used in heat recovery steam generators.
