Vijaya Bank wins

MUMBAI: Vijaya Bank boosted its semifinal chances in the men's section of the Savio Cup all-India basketball tournament on Thursday, defeating Indian Juniors 90-66. Now the bank side faces a must-win game against leader Punjab in Pool `B'.

Western Railway is another team in contention, despite being outplayed 64-90 by Punjab. Srinivas Gowda contributed 23 points, while Murali Mohan and Rony Zakharia netted 16 points each for Vijaya Bank. Murli Krishna (18) and Gurpreet Singh (13) were on target for the National junior side. Talwinder Singh (21) and Jagdeep Singh (24) made Punjab's task easier in a thriller against Western.

The results: Men (Pool `B'): Vijaya Bank, Bangalore 90 (Srinivas Gowda 23, Murli Mohan 16, Rony Zhakaria 16) bt India Juniors 66 (T. Murli Krishna 18, Gurpreet Singh 13)H T: 56-28. Quarter wise points breakup: 28-10, 28-18, 16-19, 18-19; Punjab 90 (Talwinderjit Singh 21, Jagdeep Singh 24) bt Western Railway 64 (Trideep Rai 39, R. Ethiraj 12). HT: 40-33.

Women: Maharashtra 70 (Manisha Kaprekar 28, Indu S 19) bt Western Railway 59 (Shanti Saldanha 15, Ivy Cherian 12, Arnika Gujar Patil 11)HT: 35-37. — Special Correspondent
