Having celebrated their birth with much pomp and show, the National Zoological Park here -- better known as Delhi Zoo -- this Thursday had more good news about their prize possession: the three jaguar cubs.

Getting them ready for public display this spring, the Delhi Zoo vet Paneer Selvam said he was pleased with the progress that the cubs had made and added that they were under strict vigil with their feed and hygiene being carefully monitored on a day-to-day basis.

Born to 11-year-old Sundar and eight-year-old Sundari, who were brought in from Sri Lanka in exchange for black bucks in 1998, this is the first time that the pair has given birth to three cubs. This is also the first time that the zoo has managed to keep all the cubs born to the pair alive and healthy.

"We had noticed that the mother (Sundari) wasn't very keen to feed her cubs and after we lost some jaguar cubs in the past it was decided that the only way out to help the cubs survive was to shift them to hand rearing. The zoo already is well stocked with jaguar cubs; Soni, Suchi and Viji were picked up and separated from their mother. They are all doing well now. This new set of cubs, which will be ready for public display in the next three months, are also doing well. Born on September 29, the cubs are yet to be named," says Mr. Selvam. Speaking about the food chart of the cubs, he adds: "We are proud to say that the cubs are doing well.

We have been feeding the cubs with bitch and goat milk and now they have been shifted to soup, milk and chicken pieces. As soon as we can replace the cubs diet with meat, we would be putting them out for display. The cubs are responding well to the regime that they have been put on weight and we are happy with the results." — Bindu Shajan Perappadan
