A Japanese month in the Capital

The Japan Cultural Month began here in the Capital on Wednesday with a special Gagaku performance at the residence of the Japanese Ambassador, Yasukuni Enoki. Gagaku is traditional Japanese imperial court music and dance. It attained its artistic form by the 10th Century and was then passed down from one generation to another under the patronage of the Japanese imperial family.

Gagaku has been performed at several court functions at the Imperial Palace, State banquets and on the occasion of spring and autumn garden parties besides Japanese cultural festivals in Monaco, France, Czechoslovakia and Australia. It is believed to have reached Japan around the 7th Century from India and China. The Otonowakai-Gagaku group was formed in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, in 1996.

As part of the cultural month, a photographic exhibition, "Looking for Buddha Land", by Hiroshi Moritani will also be held at the Lalit Kala Gallery Five from this coming Saturday. It will remain open till Nov. 18.

The 18th Northern Region Japanese Language Speech Contest that would see participation of students from the Japanese language institutions in Delhi and other cities will take place at the WWF Auditorium here this Saturday. An inter-school quiz contest for students of premier schools of Delhi based on the history, geography, art, culture and heritage of Japan will be held on November 18 at Kamani Auditorium. Teams from about 100 schools will participate in a written preliminary test and the top teams with the highest scores will participate in the finals.

A retrospective Japanese film festival will be held at Siri Fort Auditorium II from Nov. 21 to 24. — Madhur Tankha
