ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee has urged the police to stop the alleged harassment of doctors and lawyers in the State for treating patients and taking up cases related to some organisations. Talking to newspersons here on Thursday general secretary of APCLC S. Seshaiah, alleged that the police harassment of doctors and lawyers, mostly being practiced in Telangana district, had now spread to Anantapur. He cited the case of a lawyer Abdul Razak who was reportedly booked by the police as he had taken up a case pertaining to Rythu Coolie Sangrama Samithi.
`It's their duty'
Prof. Seshaiah explained that while treating a patient was a duty of the doctor without knowing the background or credentials of the patient, it was the same with the lawyers who would take up the cases of people who would approach them. But, the police were harassing such doctors and lawyers by foisting cases against them.
`Soft targets'
Failure of the police in proper crime detection was forcing them to harass such soft targets, he observed. He demanded the police to withdraw case registered against Mr. Razak and stop harassment of doctors and lawyers for handling naxal cases and of a few other organisations. APCLC district president M. Purushottam, vice-president R. Harinatha Reddy, secretary S. Vijaykumar and OPDR district secretary K. Ramkumar, also demanded the police to withdraw the case booked against Mr. Razak.
