CHENNAI: The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed University) is setting up a Centre of Excellence in Nanotechnology in collaboration with Girvan Institute of Technology, U.S. and the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology. The Centre will offer academic programmes in Nanotechnology at different levels. Already three research scholars are working for their Ph.D at SRMIST. The departments of Physics, Electronics, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering will jointly develop the Centre, under the leadership of M. Ponnavaikko, Director (Research and Virtual Education). As a lead to this initiative, a workshop on perspective in Nanotechnology was organised by the Institute's Department of Physics, recently. Lalit M. Bharadwaj, Deputy Director and Head, Bio Molecular Electronics and Nanotechnology Division, Central Scientific Instruments Organization, Chandigarh, inaugurated the workshop and spoke on the perspectives of Nanotechnology. Bio-nanotechnology, he said, could take advantage of functional devices in living systems for development of hybrid innovative devices with higher performance and miniaturisation.
Drug delivery
Presentations on carbon nanotubes (hailed as the material for the 21st century), nano-tech approach to drug delivery were made by speakers including C. Gopalakrishnan, Nano-scale physicist, Trinity College, Dublin. T.P. Ganesan, Pro-Vice Chancellor, SRMIST released the proceedings of the workshop. Dr. Ponnavaikko said the Centre of Excellence in Nanotechnology hoped to produce carbon nanotubes of world class in bulk quantity and to do basic research in the application areas of Nanotechnology along with its collaborators.
Participation certificates
R. Venkataramani, Dean, distributed the participation certificates. The workshop was attended by the science and engineering faculty of different colleges all over Tamil Nadu.
