Big hike in sugarcane price

Special Correspondent

Price of early varieties increased to Rs. 135 per quintal in Haryana

  • New price declared is highest in the country
  • Price hike is due to high cost of production
  • No new licenses to gur and khandsari units

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government on Thursday decided to raise the price of early varieties of sugarcane to Rs. 135 per quintal which is the highest in the country.

The price has registered a record increase of Rs. 18 over last year, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said, after presiding over a meeting of the Haryana Sugarcane Control Board.

Mr. Hooda said the price had been raised in view of the increased cost of production of sugarcane. He said the previous Government had fixed the price at Rs. 110 per quintal in 1999-2000. There was no increase in the price of sugarcane for four years and it was increased to Rs. 117 per quintal in 2004-2005.

He pointed out that the price fixed for early varieties of sugarcane was Rs. 115 per quintal in Punjab, Rs. 112 in Uttar Pradesh and Rs. 117 in Uttaranchal.

He said the price of mid varieties of sugarcane had been fixed at Rs. 123 per quintal and that of late varieties at Rs. 121 per quintal.

Mr. Hooda said that no new licences would be issued to gur and khandsari units in the current crushing season to make available more sugarcane for the sugar mills. However the old licences would be renewed.
