Three mobile phones, fake police identity cards, two sickles and an auto seized

THENI: Six persons were arrested on the charges of posing as CBI officers and for stealing cash from a house in Pannaipuram in Kombai police limits on Thursday.

A special team, led by Bodinaickanur Deputy Superintendent of Police, Manoharan, arrested all the accused within four hours.

The arrested were, A. Packiaraj alias Raja of Inam Reddypatti in Virudhunagar district, Suruli of Ammapatti near Uthamapalayam, Thangapandi of Ezhumalai in Madurai district, Siva, a LIC agent in Uthamapalayam, Ramesh of Mumbai and Pandi, auto driver in Uthamapalayam.

Three mobile phones, fake police identity cards, two sickles and an auto-rickshaw used for robbery were seized from the gang.

Police said the gang leader, Packiaraj and others hired an auto-rickshaw in Uthamapalayam and went to the residence of Ganesan in Pannaipuram on Wednesday night. They introduced themselves as CBI officers and conducted `surprise check' there. They took Rs.4,600 from an almirah saying they were counterfeit notes. Packiaraj had asked Ganesan to collect the money from the police station the following morning.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Sudhakar, son of Ganesan, within hours, Kombai police alerted their Uthamapalayam counterparts, who in turn arrested the auto-driver. On the basis of information given by the auto driver, police arrested Packiaraj and Ramesh from a lodge in Uthamapalayam and others at various places in the town.

History-sheeters

Investigations revealed that the gang were involved in a robbery at a house in Periyakulam, and were planning to rob a house of a jewellery merchant in Tuticorin. Many cases had been filed against the gang members related to robbery, waylaying and theft cases in various police stations in Erode, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts. Police are also in search of Perumal alias Murugesan and Chellapandian of Periyakulam in this connection.
