KOZHIKODE: The `kalajathas' organised by the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP), aimed at conveying the contemporary events in Kerala, will tour the State from November 11 to December 11.

The KSSP is also celebrating the silver jubilee of its kalajathas this year. It was in 1980 that it organised its first kalajatha.

The KSSP kalajathas include short plays, songs and folk art forms. The themes of kalajathas include progress of science and technology, environment, health, development, education and literacy.

"Every kalajatha is an intervention and a call for struggle by siding with the people. Finding funds through sale of books and organising related programmes are specialities of the kala jathas," said K.V. Vijayan, convener of the kalajatha.

"The present kalajatha throws light on the questioning of renaissance values and general mindset that led to the formation of `unified Keralam'. The jatha gives a clarion call to try for a Kerala of cooperation and social justice by changing the State which has taken a regressive step following social tensions arising out of self-financing institutions, super speciality hospitals, express highway, real estate projects, growing mafia, harassment of women and anarchy," says Mr. Vijayan.

The rehearsal camps for the kalajatha were completed in two phases - one at Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram and the other at Naduvannur in Kozhikode. The source for the kalajatha is the writings of Iyyankode Sreedharan, Pradip Mannur, K.K. Krishnakumar, Girish Gramika, Panangad Thankappan Pillai, K.R. Ramachandran and Chandrasekharan Thikkodi and the short stories by Thikkodiyan.

Jose Chirammal, Prof. P.Gangadharan, T.Sureshbabu and Pradeep Mandur are the directors of the jathas. P.K.Kalan will inaugurate the jatha at Kalpetta.
