VISAKHAPATNAM: On the penultimate day of the South Zone under-17 cricket tournament here on Thursday, Karnataka seems to be in a position to retain its top spot in the league table after gaining first innings lead over Andhra. Andhra bowlers did well to prevent Karnataka from scoring a big first innings total, restricting the team to 203 after it resumed at 117 for three on the second day. Karnataka gained a 71-run lead. But in its second essay, Andhra was in trouble losing six wickets for 147 runs. Sunil N. Raju picked up three wickets. Hyderabad, just one point behind Karnataka on the points table, could only hope for a draw against Tamil Nadu. Hyderabad gained first innings lead of 116 runs but an outright win on Friday might not be possible. Praneeth Kumar (unbeaten on 92, 4x5) and Siva Prasad (45, 4x8) helped Hyderabad gain first innings lead with their 70-run stand for the fifth wicket. M. Rangarajan claimed four wickets for Tamil Nadu. The scores: Andhra 132 and 147 for six in 56 overs (M. Praneeth 48 batting, Vamsi Manohar 27, K.R. Reddy 27, Sunil N. Raju three for 40) vs Karnataka 203 in 79 overs (Karan Rao 45, Manish Pandey 41, Abrar Kazi 31, G.V.S. Prasad four for 78). Tamil Nadu 175 in 78.5 overs vs Hyderabad 291 for eight in 107 overs (Praneeth Kumar 92 batting, Siva Prasad 45, Benjamin Thomas 42, M. Rangarajan four for 96). Goa 243 and 129 for three in 44 overs (Ninad Pawaskar 57 batting, Girish Yadav 34) vs Kerala 233 in 64.4 overs (Santu Jose 99, Pious Joseph 40, Raji Lal 28, Ninand Pawaskar five for 40).
