Atwal tied 22nd

SHANGHAI: Arjun Atwal finished tied 22nd with a three-under 69, while compatriot Jyoti Randhawa carded one-over 73 to finish tied 51st after the first round in the $five million HSBC Champions golf here on Thursday.

The trio of Peter O'Malley, Paul Lawrie and Nick Dougherty fired identical eight-under 64 to share the top slot at the par-72 Sheshan International Golf Club.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods carded a seven-under 65 to occupy the fourth place with two others while Vijay Singh's five-under 67 saw him finishing tied 10th.

Meanwhile a 10th tee starter, Atwal kicked off in style with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes and the US PGA Tour regular fired a string of seven par shots to complete his flawless halfway journey.

Resuming his journey, Atwal stumbled on his first bogey on the 12th hole even though he atoned it with two successive birdies on 13th and 14th. But he bogeyed again on the 15th even though there was no more setback thereafter for the Indian who signed off with a birdie to complete his round.

Brief results: 64: Peter O'Malley, Paul Lawrie, Nick Dougherty 65: Tiger Woods, K J Choi, David Howell, Robert-Jan Derksen 66: Kenneth Ferrie, Michael Campbell 67: Paul Casey, Thomas Bjorn, Vijay Singh, Thaworn Wiratchant, Zhang Lian-wei, Ian Poulter, Nick O'Hern , Thongchai Jaidee 68: Charl Schwartzel, John Bickerton, Simon Wakefield, Richard lee 69: Terry Pilkadaris, Padraig Harrington, Arjun Atwal, Henrik Stenson, Scott Strange, Peter Hanson, Titch Moore. — Agencies
