HEAVE HO: Railways' Nicolus Latha won the gold in shot-put event, even as her team dominated the show.
Hyderabad: Naunidh Singh of Punjab set a new national record in the men's 110m hurdles timing 14.05 seconds on the concluding day of the 45th National Open athletic championships at the GMC Balayogi stadium here on Thursday. Returning after a two year gap Naunidh broke the existing mark, which was set by Gurpreet Singh at 14.07s in 2001. The 21-year-old Naunidh, an employee of BSF, said he was confident of winning since he had put in a lot of hard work and was expecting to come up with a good performance here. In the women's javelin throw, Gurmeet Kaur of LIC broke her own meet record of 52.91 when she threw the spear to a distance of 53.77m. It was however below her national record of 58.64m. Another new meet record was set in the men's triple jump where Ranjith Maheshwary of Railways registered 16.39m to break Sanjay Kumar Rai's mark of 16.23m. Gamanda Ram of Services and Pinki Paramanik of Railways were adjudged Best Athletes in the men's and women's categories respectively. Railways won the men's, women's and the overall team titles with comfortable margins over its nearest rivals in each category. The results: Men: 20 Km walk: 1.
