Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli has been directed by the Sessions Court here to be present in person for the hearing of his anticipatory bail application on Friday. An extortion case was filed against Mr.Gawli, his aide corporator Sunil Ghate and three others on November 8.

Mr.Gawli representing Chinchpokli area in Central Mumbai allegedly extorted over Rs. 15 lakhs from a proprietor in Central Mumbai to settle a business dispute. The three accused apart from Mr. Gawli and Mr. Ghate are Sanjay Girkar, Sadanand Panchal alias Bhavoli and Raja Sadvilkar. Mumbai police could not trace Mr.Gawli even after raiding his stronghold Dagadi Chawl, where the office of his party Akhil Bhartiya Sena is situated.

Mr. Gawli filed for an anticipatory bail but was not present in person. The defence counsel submitted that Mr. Gawli fears arrest when he comes to court. The court assured the defence that the police will not arrest him before the hearing is completed.

Mr. Gawli's wife Asha Gawli known as `Mummy' was admitted to Jaslok Hospital. The police have not been able to question her regarding Mr. Gawli's whereabouts.
