Form all-party panel for relief works: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

Party seeks adequate relief fund "Rice, kerosene and cash compensation should be given to the affected people in rural areas"

CHENNAI: The State council of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the State Government to constitute an all-party committee to supervise and expedite flood relief works in the city and in other affected areas in the State.

The two-day meeting of the council, which concluded here on Wednesday, urged the Central Government to sanction adequate flood relief fund to Tamil Nadu.

Urging the State Government to execute flood relief works on a war footing, the meeting wanted the government to waive all crop loans in areas where farmers had lost their crops and sanction sufficient compensation for the loss of crops.

Rice, kerosene and cash compensation should be given to the affected people in rural areas.

As agricultural workers did not have work in view of floods, the government should give free rice (one kg) and Rs. 25 per family per day till the situation improved.

The meeting also criticised some print and visual media for blowing out of proportion flood reports panicking the people. It wanted early restoration of road traffic, affected by floods, and plugging of breaches in tanks.

The meeting was presided over by State secretary, N.Varadarajan, in which all-India general secretary, Prakash Karat and polit bureau members R. Umanath, and K.Varadarajan participated.
