MANGALORE: The District Youth Congress Committee has urged Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh to initiate action against any organisation that prevents people from observing their religious practices. A delegation comprising office-bearers of the committee headed by Bondalla Jagannath Shetty met Mr. Dharam Singh during his visit here recently and presented a memorandum in this regard. Referring to clashes between two groups at Saibeen Complex, Lalbagh, here recently, they said such incidents should be condemned and no organisation should be allowed to disrupt religious practices by people on flimsy grounds. The committee also urged the Chief Minister to take steps to reign in various local outfits of Sangh Parivar which, they said, have unleashed a terror campaign in the region.
Assault
Mr. Shetty said members of these outfits are assaulting Congress workers and members of the minority communities. He urged the Chief Minister to direct the district administration to crackdown on such elements and instruct the police to register cases against troublemakers. Mr. Shetty said elected representatives sympathetic towards the members of these outfits are pressuring the police against taking action. The delegation also met Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President and Water Resources Minister M. Mallikarjuna Kharge and urged him to give preference to youth in the elections to panchayat bodies. Mr. Kharge assured the delegation that he will discuss the issue with KPCC office-bearers in charge of Dakshina Kannada district and asked them to work for the victory of the party. Mr. Kharge handed over a cheque for Rs. 50,000 on behalf of the KPCC to the widow of Siddakatte Abdul, president, Sangabettu Gram Panchayat. Abdul was murdered allegedly by his rivals in Bantwal taluk.
