Rotary launches cataract surgery drive

CHENNAI:
R. Shyam Sundar, district governor, Rotary International District 3230 launched a project to cater to the needs of patients with cataract problems
at a function at the Pammal Sankara Eye Hospital recently.
The Rotary Foundation, U.S.A has taken up one lakh cataract surgeries with IOL in India as a Rotary Centennial year project. Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park and Operation Eyesight Universal, Canada, is supporting the project.
Rotary International District 3230, Rotary Club of Madras Fort and Rotary Club of Nanganallur is identifying over 3200 patients through the outreach programme in Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and other districts with the help of the eye hospital. The project costs U.S. $71,192 (about Rs. 30 lakhs).
The patients would be operated upon, transported back to their villages and given a review after 10 days and if need be provided with corrective spectacles.
R. Benjamin Cherian, former district governor and M. Balaji, district counsellor, Rotary International District 3230 were present on the occasion.
