Kidnapped boy makes his escape

'Six more boys were in the abductors' van'

CHENNAI : A schoolboy was allegedly kidnapped while on the way to school on Wednesday morning, but managed to escape from his abductors, police said. Aminjakarai police on Thursday received a complaint from the boy's father, Abdul Rehman, saying that his son, who had stopped to fix a deflated tyre, was kidnapped by a person in a van under the pretext of asking the boy for an address.

The boy managed to escape when they stopped for tea in a southern suburb.

He returned home around 2 p.m. and told his parents about the incident. He told the police that were six more boys in the vehicle. Police are investigating.

Spurious cameras

Mambalam police seized 100 spurious film cameras from a shop in Sathya Bazaar, T. Nagar on Wednesday. Two persons have been arrested.

Police said they received a complaint from representatives of Canon Camera Company that cameras sold in the shop bore the company's name but were locally manufactured.

They raided the shop and arrested the shop owner, Ajith (32) and an employee, Syed (22). Cases have been filed against them under the Copyrights Act. The two were remanded to judicial custody.

Accident at Anna Nagar

A 17-year-old girl died and four others suffered injuries, when a mini-lorry hit them on EVR Periyar Salai near Anna Arch junction on Wednesday.

Police said Shalini of Arumbakkam was riding pillion on a two-wheeler, driven by her father and were waiting at the signal on EVR Periyar Salai when the lorry hit the two-wheeler and some pedestrians.

The injured have been rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital.

The lorry driver, Manikandan of Kanchipuram, was under the influence of alcohol and had lost control of the vehicle, they said. He has been arrested.

The injured have been identified as Kalpana (18), Shalini Devi (17), Maheswari (42), Kumar (26) and Selvam (39). Shalini died of her injuries on Thursday.
