Railway staff stage torchlight demonstration

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Loco running staff wing affiliated to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) on Thursday organised a torchlight demonstration in front of the Moore Market Complex here demanding that the Railway Board not accept the recommendations of the running allowance committee.

SRMU alleged that there was an attempt to implement the recommendations before the meeting of the All-India Railwaymen Federation in Mumbai next week.

The union warned that running staff would resort to direct action without prior information if the Board made any such attempt.

`Security risk'

It criticised the railway administration for appointing retired loco employees as temporary staff, which, it said, was a security risk.
