NEW DELHI: On what basis has security been provided to a former member of BJP president L.K. Advani's family, the mother-in-law of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a journalist of the Hindi daily Punjab Kesri, two businessmen, a TV reporter, the son-in-law of a former BJP Minister and two advocates? Putting this query to the Union Home Ministry and the city police, the Delhi High Court has directed them to file detailed affidavits by December 7. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma passed the directive after perusing a list filed by the Ministry of persons who were being provided security at state expense. The list included Gauri Advani, ex-wife of Jayant Advani, son of L.K. Advani; the mother-in-law of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi; advocates Ajay Srivastava and Ajay Aggarwal; political activist Ramesh Dalal; businessmen Sandeep Purie and K.B. Mishra; Special Correspondent of Punjab Kesri, Sunil Sharma; Zee News reporter Naveen Kumar; and the son-in-law of the former Union Minister for Urban Development, Jagmohan. Standing counsel for the Delhi Government Mukta Gupta's explanation failed to satisfy the judges. On providing security to the two advocates, Ms. Gupta submitted that Mr. Srivastava had purchased the property of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, while Mr. Aggarwal had filed a public interest litigation petition in the Taj corridor scam involving the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati. She further submitted that a total of 391 persons were provided X or Y or Z category security on the basis of the threat perception assessed by the Union Home Ministry. The directions came during the hearing of a public interest litigation petition filed by Delhi High Court lawyer Rajeev Awasthi.
