MUMBAI : Geetha Ann Jose (28 points) and Renjini Patel (22) excelled under offensive and defensive boards as Southern Railway stunned inter-Railway women's champions Western Railway 86-60 in the concluding league tie of United Phosphorous-sponsored Savio Cup all-India basketball tournament at Don Bosco School. Southern confirmed a final place and await Maharashtra vs India Juniors league match outcome to decide the second finalist. Ball-handler Shanti Saldanha top-scored with 15 points for Western, along with Arnika Gujar (12). Vijaya Bank stretched Punjab for the first time in Pool B men's league, before bowing out 77-82. Punjab and Western advanced into semifinal phase, alongwith Cochin Customs and North Western Railway from Pool A. Murli Mohan's aggression against the Punjab defence paid off, top scoring with 28 points. The Pool B toppers won on strength of teamwork, Jagdeep Singh (29) and Snehpal Singh (17) doing bulk of scoring.
The results: Men (Pool B): Punjab 82 (Jagdeep Singh 29, Snehpal Singh 17) bt Vijaya Bank , Bangalore 77 (Murli Mohan 28, Srinivas Gowda 20) Half-time: 45-42. Women: Southern Rly 86 (Geetha Ann Jose 28, Renjini Patel 22) bt Western Rly 60 (Shanti Saldanha 15, Arnika Gujar 12) H-T 47-28.
