Sports division swimmers hog limelight

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Swimmers from sports division hogged the limelight on the opening day of the 36th State school aquatic meet at the Water Works Swimming pool here on Saturday.

The sports division trainees set four out of the five meet records set on the first day. The day also saw two long-standing records being erased from the books. S. Sunil, the lone record breaker from general school, broke the existing mark in the 200m breaststroke senior boys. Sunil clocked 2:45.68 to sink Shaji Joseph's old mark (2:47.08) set in 1989.

S.V. Abhilash of SAI, Thrissur, bettered the 16-year-old record of K. Saseendran (2.29.41) by clocking 2:27.50 in the 200m butterfly event in the senior boys' category.

The others who entered the record books were Milan Kadukattil (SAI, Tsr) in junior boys 400m freestyle event, the 4x100m medley squad of Sports division, Thiruvannathapuram, in sub-junior boys section and Joshna P. Joy in 200m freestyle senior girls.

Defending champion Thiruvananthapuram leads the points tally with 83 points followed by Attingal (61) and Palakkad (15).

Abhilash (SAI, Tsr) - 2:27.50 (NMR; OR - 2:29.41, K. Saseendran, 1989). 4x100m medley relay: Attingal - 4:36.78.

Juniors: 400m freestyle: Milan Kadukattil (SAI, Tsr) - 4:35.98 (NMR; OR - 4:40.53, S. Arun Kumar, 2003); 200m breaststroke: Syam Babu (Ktm) - 2:55.76; 4x100m medley relay: Attingal - 5:01.99.

Sub-juniors: 200m freestyle: Salu Sasi (Tvm) - 5:16.53; 200m breaststroke: Sanju Issac (Mvtm) - 3:04.33; 4x100m medley relay: Spdn, Tvm - 5:08.90 (NMR; OR - 5:20.09, Spdn, Tvm, 1995).

Girls: Seniors: 200m freestyle: Joshna P. Joy (SAI, Tsr) - 2:23.98 (NMR; OR - 2:26.77, Joshna P. Joy, 2004); 200m butterfly: Saranya S. Nair (Tvm) - 3:01.94; 200m breaststroke: 1. B.R. Neenu (Tvm) - 3:15.42.

Juniors: 200m freestyle: Geethu S. Nair (Alp) - 2:32.05; 200m breaststroke: Sherin Joy (Khgd) - 3:15.73.

Sub-juniors: 200m breaststroke: C.R. Ragi (Tvm) - 3:30.71.
