NAGAPATTINAM : Nagapattinam district has suffered a loss of Rs.58 crores except agriculture in the nine-day rain havoc from November 1 to 9. The exact damage caused to the samba paddy crops submerged in 60,000 hectares in various parts of the district will be assessed after the water completely receded from the paddy fields, said J.Radhakrishnan, Nagapattinam Collector, here on Saturday. Talking to The Hindu , the Collector said that out of the estimated loss of Rs.58 crores, nearly Rs.22 crores loss accounted for the Public Works Department for its irrigation systems, Rs.17 crores for damage of highway roads, Rs.11 crores for rural development and Rs.eight crores for municipalities, special pachayats and TNEB. Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the district had experienced torrential rains for nine days from November 1 to 9 and the average rainfall was 524 mm. Thiruppoondi recorded the highest average rainfall of 694 mm during the period followed by Nagapattinam 656 mm, Kollidam 602 mm, Thalainayar 586 mm, Sirkazhi 535 mm, Manalmedu 468 mm, Tharangampadi 459 mm, Mayiladuturai 358 mm and Vedaranyam 357 mm. The Collector said that in all 14 persons died in the rain in various parts of the district and pointed out that about 1.34 lakh people were evacuated from 500 villages and hamlets and were provided shelter and food in 55 relief centres. More than 50 per cent of the people had returned to their homes. Mr Radhakrishnan said that special teams had been formed to assess the fully and partially damaged huts in the rain-affected areas. He pointed out that the Government had sanctioned Rs.three crores for providing immediate relief to the affected areas in the district.
