Al-Douri is dead

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: Izzat Ibrahim Al-Douri, long known to be former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's right hand man, has reportedly died. A Web site allegedly run by a top Ba'ath party member confirmed the death. It described Mr. Al-Douri as the "field commander of the heroic resistance." Interestingly, the web site is believed to be run by Salah Al-Mukhtar, the former Iraqi Ambassador to India, who had to leave office in the wake of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Mr. Al-Douri was known to be in poor heath even before the U.S. invasion, and suspected to be suffering from leukaemia. In the Jordanian capital Amman, Ziad al-Najdawi, a lawyer close to Mr. Hussein's family, was quoted as saying that the former Ba'ath party leader was a "warrior and a militant" who rejected "American terrorism and Persian rule in Iraq." He said that Al-Douri's death would not undermine the resistance.
