Churches, schools attacked in Lahore

Islamabad: Tension prevailed near the eastern city of Lahore where an angry mob set ablaze three churches, Christian schools and residence of the local bishop, following reports that a youth allegedly desecrated the Holy Koran.

Around 50 protesters were arrested and dozens injured in a baton-charge by police personnel when the mob went on the rampage following reports that one Yousuf Masih had allegedly burnt a large number of copies of the book on Friday night in Sangla Hill locality, Pakistan's NNI news agency quoted eye witnesses as saying.

Masih, who was reportedly caught by the locals, later escaped. Police have registered a case against the accused, NNI said. All educational institutions were also closed on the order of Education Officer.

Many Christians have fled the area to avoid any untoward incidents, the report said.

The mob also allegedly destroyed the houses of Yousuf Masih and his brother. President Pervez Musharraf called the local body representatives to step up campaign against religious extremists.

At a conference here, he sought their support in addressing the malaise of extremism. — PTI
