VILLUPURAM: A police team recovered three idols stolen from the Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple at Varanjaram in Kallakurichi block, within 50 days of the offence. In this connection, five persons have been arrested. According to the Kallakurichi Deputy Superintendent of Police Balasubramanian, the idols of lord Subramanya, his consort Valli and Chandikeswar were stolen from the temple on August 21, this year. A. Sheik Ahamad (23) of Moongilthuraipattu along with five of his associates committed the theft. They hid the idols in a pond at the Sithalur junction. Thinking that the idols would be of great value, they cut that of Chandikeswar and found it to be made of brass and decided to dispose of the idols at Athur in Salem. When Ahamad and one of his associates were transporting the idols, they were intercepted at Mandaiveli in Kallakurichi by a police team led by Mr. Balasubramanian and the idols were seized. Those arrested included P. Balachander (22) of Emapair, P. Sivagurunathan (38) of Kandachimangalam, G. Elumalai (35) of Periyamampattu, K. Gnanavel (23) of Keelapalayam and K. Selvam (24) of Kallakurichi. The police said Ahamad was facing trial in the murder cases of a temple watchman at Poottai and an Adi Dravida girl at Arasampattu in Sankarapuram block. Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjay Arora and Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah commended the police team.
