AISF meet on education

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The 26th national conference of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) to be held here from January 3 to 6, 2006 will discuss issues such as commercialisation of education and the recent judgment of the Supreme Court on the unaided educational institutions, before evolving a strategy to safeguard the interests of the students.

The national president of the AISF, Ramakrishna Panda, said here on Saturday that the meet would be held at a crucial juncture as many changes had been taking place in the field of education. "The conference will be discussing all the issues concerning the future of students, education sector and the society at large."

He accused the previous NDA Government of converting the system of higher education into a market with profit making as its motive. In the prevailing scenario, only those who could afford to pay "exorbitant" fees would be able to avail themselves of higher education.

Fraternal delegates from several countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, People's Republic of China, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and Russia, besides 1,000 delegates from all over the country would take part in the conference.
