TIRUPUR: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has prepared estimates to shift transformers, streetlights and electricity poles from the narrow Perumanallur Road, which witnesses frequent traffic congestion. The electricity poles, on the middle of the road, cause hindrance to motorists. With increasing vehicular movement, the Highways Department had asked the Electricity Board two months ago to shift the poles to the road margins to provide more space for motorists. According to sources, the stretch between Mummoorthy Nagar and Pandiyan Nagar has 54 poles and a transformer. The cost to shift comes to around Rs. 8.12 lakhs. Another portion between Pandiyan Nagar and Kanakkampalayam has 32 poles and it requires Rs. 2.99 lakhs for shifting them. From Pushpa Theatre junction to Mummoorthy Nagar, there are 51 poles. It will cost Rs.11.53 lakhs to shift these. The fourth segment of a km has 40 electricity poles requiring Rs. 5.98 lakhs.
Need of the hour
The Police Department said the shifting of polls to the corner of the road would help them to a great extent. More than two lakh vehicles ply on the narrow roads of Tirupur. Despite the administration's drive against encroachments, the road space is hardly enough. In places with only a two-lane road against the required six-lane, the available space must be utilised to the maximum. For this the shifting of electricity and telephone poles was a must, sources said. Officials of the Highway Department said they would send the proposal to their superiors and once they accorded permission, the amount would be remitted. Besides Perumanallur Road, the Highways Department asked the EB to shift electricity poles on Kumaran Road, Mangalam Road, College Road, Kangeyam Road, Dharapuram Road and Uthukuli Road.
