Letters to the Editor
The editorial, `The challenge of mental illness,' (Nov. 9) provided good information. The fact that national spending on mental health is a mere 2.05 per cent of the total health budget is sad. This should immediately be enhanced. Also, the number of psychiatrists should increase. Above all, what a mentally ill person needs most is love within the family and from society. It is true that it is difficult to cope with the mentally ill. But the effort should not stop.
P. Kannan,
* * * Involving general practitioners in the fight against mental illness as recommended by the Schizophrenia Research Foundation in Chennai will be a boon for the mentally ill. It will also create awareness regarding easy, viable, and successful management of the illness, which in turn will help obliterate social prejudices in this regard.
Rajeeva Nayan Pathak,
