SUCCOUR FOR THE NEEDY: Additional Sub-Judge Mayandi receiving petitions from poor litigants.
TIRUCHI: The District Legal Services Authority has been playing a crucial role in rendering justice to the economically weaker litigant public who are unable to afford the expenditure of legal consultancy from lawyers. The legal services authority has been ensuring that economic poverty did not stand in the way of an individual getting justice. To show that various legal services are being handled free, the authority has been conducting various camps mostly in rural and semi-urban centres in the district explaining the aims of free legal assistance. That women outnumber men at several camps shows that the camps help settle several women-related issues, especially marital disputes and maintenance cases. One such camp was organised in the city by the authority in co-ordination with the Deccan Consumer Rights Protection Council, Tiruchi. The state secretary of the council, Bharatharaja, said legal remedy for various issues such as bail petitions, compensation for road accidents, atrocities against women and land acquisition disputes, were explained. The people were assured of counselling to get pensions and free pattas. The Additional Sub-Judge, Mayandi, appealed to the masses to take maximum advantage of the Free Legal Aid Services Authority. He received 65 petitions from the public on the occasion. Mr. Mayandi, who is also secretary of the authority, said that earlier four codes of laws, including the Indian Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, had been sufficient to deal with various crimes, in contrast to the different dimensions of laws and Acts in the present-day context. Judicial Magistrate R. Alexander and the president of the Tiruchi Bar Association, M.S.V. Veeramani, spoke.
