Raichur: The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has threatened to stage a dharna if the Government fails to initiate action to supersede the Raichur City Municipal Council within a week. In a statement here on Saturday, BSP State unit general secretary S. Mareppa and district unit general secretary Y. Narasappa said that Lokayukta N. Venkatachala had conducted a detailed investigation into the malpractices found in the municipality and had recommended that the Government initiate criminal proceedings against president of the municipal council M. Eranna. The Lokaukta had found Mr. Eranna and a few others guilty of misuse of powers, which had caused heavy financial loss to the Government. However, no action has been initiated in this regard. They said that the BSP had submitted a report to the Government listing the alleged malpractices and misuse of funds by the city municipal council and had urged it to implement the recommendations of the Lokayukta and supersede the council. But there has been no response. They alleged that malpractices continued in the calling of tenders and allocation of works in water supply schemes, road repair projects and maintenance of sanitation in the city. The party alleged that the councillors had misused funds released under the 11th Finance Commission and other funds reserved to improve basic amenities in slums in the city. They said that the party will stage a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office here next week if the Government fails to supersede the municipal council.
