VISAKHAPATNAM: Puripanda Appalaswamy, whose birth centenary is being celebrated this year, was an outstanding scholar and litterateur who promoted the use of spoken Telugu in writings and brought literature closer to people, said president of the Lok Nayak Foundation Y. Lakshmiprasad. Appalaswamy's statue will be erected on the Beach Road, he said.

He was speaking at a function on Sunday to mark the release of a book on the life and times of Puripanda authored by Dwana Sastry and Bandi Satyanarayana.

Vice-Chancellor of Potti Sriramulu Telugu University A. Manjulatha, who released the book, said that Puripanda was a great scholar well-versed in Sanskrit, Telugu and English.

    Effort lauded

Dr. Dwana Sastry said the credit of introducing and encouraging Sri Sri should go to Puripanda. His contribution to Telugu language and literature should be recognised and remembered by posterity. Drawing inspiration from Puripanda's life and literature, he and his student (Bandi Satyanarayana) had brought out the short biography.
