ELURU: District Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday said a training centre for police would be set up here shortly as part of the Government's endeavour to give a pro-people image to the police machinery. Speaking at a meet-the-press programme held here under the aegis of Media Club of Eluru, the SP said the proposed training centre would strive to bring behavioural change among the personnel at the police station level while dealing with public. Efforts were underway to sensitise the police on gender crimes. Reception centres manned by women constables or women home guards would be set up soon for redressal of gender-related grievances, he explained. The SP did some plain speaking on the performance of police in combating crime and recoveries in property offences. "Crime rate is on the decline. Similarly, the rate of crime detection and recovery in property offences is also on the wane,'' he said.
Voluntary policing
The SP mooted either voluntary policing or hiring of private security personnel by the residents of various colonies prone to offences to supplement the role of police in combating crime. "It is quite impossible to ensure 100 per cent recovery in property offences even in developed countries." Mr. Reddy informed that accident-prone areas on the State and National Highways were identified and recommendations were made to the authorities concerned seeking remedial measures by effecting structural changes in designing of roads accordingly.
