Naxal sympathiser held

ANANTAPUR: A CPI (Maoist) sympathiser, Boya Eeswaraiah alias Prabhakar, was arrested by the Uravakonda police on Guntakal road near Uravakonda on Monday. He has been working for the party since 2000. Eeswaraiah became more active after he was promised a piece of land by the party in 2004, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

3 youths drowned

NALGONDA: Three youngsters, all fruit vendors, drowned in Vazirababad major, a canal of the Nagarjunasagar project, at Kothapet thanda in Damaracharla mandal on Sunday. Only one body was fished by Monday. They were on their way back from a party thrown by a fellow-vendor when they jumped into the canal for a swim and got washed away. - Staff Reporter

Assumes charge

HYDERABAD: S. Anwar, former Special Chief Secretary to the Governor, on Monday assumed charge of the office of Vice-Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal, according to an official release. His appointment orders were issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension on August 11. The State Government issued its orders on November 9. - Special Correspondent

Student attacked

KADAPA: A first year B.Sc. student of Kadapa Government Arts College, Polathala Suresh Yadav (19), is battling for life following an attempt on his life by unknown persons on Monday. Yadav, who belongs to Mutukurupadu in Khajipet mandal, was on his way to college, when two unidentified persons attacked him with a knife. He told police he had no enemies. - Staff Reporter

Doctors oppose move

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Goverment Doctors' Association has opposed a move to bring medical services under the purview of the Panchayat Raj Department. M. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, secretary-general, on Monday said the decision was taken at a meeting on Sunday. - Special Correspondent

Talks on labour

HYDERABAD: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour has held discussions with officials and representatives of unions of the National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC) on empowerment of labour in PSUs and Government organisations. P. Sudhakar Reddy, chairman, and others discussed deployment of contract labour and working conditions at projects with union leaders. - Special Correspondent

Spiritual library opened

VIZIANAGARAM: A spiritual library was inaugurated at the Fort by Uma Alisha, IX Peethadipathi of Sri Viswa Vignana Vidya Adhyathmika Peetham, Pithapuram. Books, journals and magazines of 20 spiritual organisations in English, Hindi and Telugu are available in the library. - Correspondent

Dharna staged

VIZIANAGARAM: Toddy tappers staged a dharna at the Collectorate on Monday demanding that the Government announce the excise policy immediately, withdraw GOs 767 and 551 that are detrimental to their welfare and allot five acres of land to each society as per GO 560. - Correspondent

Naxal blast bid

Srikakulam: Two days after killing a tribal branding him a police informer, activists of CPI (Maoists) made an unsuccessful attempt to blast a theatre in the mandal headquarters town, Kotturu, 70 km from here in the wee hours of Monday, according to the Superintendent of Police, S.A.Gurappa. - Special Correspondent

Cold wave continues

HYDERABAD: Parts of the State, especially Telangana region, continued to reel under cold-wave conditions on Monday. Weather was dry in the State. Minimum temperatures fell significantly at a number of places in Telangana and at some places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. The lowest night temperature for the 24-hour period ending Monday morning - 12 degrees Celsius -- was recorded in Hyderabad Airport and Medak. - Special Correspondent

Warden among four killed in accidents

KADAPA: A hostel warden and a student were among four persons who died in two road accidents in Kadapa district in the early hours of Monday.

Warden of an SC hostel at Proddatur Y. Babu Prasada Rao (44) died instantly and a degree first year student Balaji (20) succumbed to injuries in Proddatur Government hospital, when their motorcycle was hit by a lorry near Thippalur in Yerraguntla mandal.

Two die as lorry falls off bridge

KADAPA: A speeding lorry fell off Moolavanka bridge in Chintakommadinne mandal into a canal causing instant death of its driver Noor Ahmed (33) and an unknown person. Two vegetable vendors, Chand Basha (20) and Kamaal Basha (30) and lorry cleaner Mohd. Basha (28) sustained injuries and were trapped inside the cabin. They were removed from the mangled cabin and shifted to Kadapa Government hospital.

MLAs' charge against Government

CHITTOR: Telugu Desam Party MLAs--Amarnath Reddy and Ramesh-- criticised the Government's move to dissuade farmers from cultivating paddy crop under borewells and tanks.

They also condemned the threat to withdraw free power to farmers who want to go in for paddy crop. They charged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with failing to fulfil his poll promise of releasing Rs. 300 crores for linkage of tanks in the district. - Correspondent

Nehru's birth anniversary observed

Nellore: The birth anniversary of Independent India's First Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was celebrated at Nellore on Monday.

Among those who garlanded Nehru's statue at old Madras bus stand area of the town, included Mayor P. Sailaja, State vice-president of Congress C.V. Sesha Reddy, president Congress mahila wing P. Arunamma, secretary, Indira Congress Bhavan T. Balasudhakar and others.
