Hand-made safety match units face labour shortage in Tamil Nadu

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The hand-made safety match industry, especially in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, is facing acute labour shortage. If the situation persists, it "will lose very heavily and suffer financially,'' according to the South Indian Match Manufacturers' Association.

Though some of these units have become partially mechanised, the labour shortage still persists, the association says in a release. Following the efforts of State Government, factories are rid of child labour.

Labour competition

As women get educated, they go in for white collar jobs even it meant settling for lesser wages. Competition for labour is now emerging for the textile industry which employs women on a contract basis for lump-sum payment. With overhead expenses increasing and eating into margins, the match industry in the region is facing financial loss.
