Guwahati: The Assam Government will constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to probe all recent killings in Karbi Anglong, including the October 7 murder of 23 bus passengers by suspected militants. A Senior Superintendent of Police will head the SIT. It will include experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory and personnel from other agencies, Home Commissioner B.K. Gohain said here on Tuesday. The SIT would complete the investigation in two months from the date of notification of its constitution. The State Government has already recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. However, it is yet to get any response from the agency. Mr. Gohain said the judicial probe headed by Justice P.C. Phukan had begun. The internecine violence between the Karbi and Dimasa militant outfits, the United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and the Dima Halam Daogah (DHD), claimed more than 90 lives and rendered about 50,000 people homeless in the hill district. Mr. Gohain said the Government instructed the police to take prompt action against any militant who was moving around with arms. Both the UPDS and DHD are engaged in ceasefire agreement with the Centre and the State Government.
