KOLKATA : A patient whose eye was nibbled at by ants while she was in a State hospital here died on Tuesday. A committee has been set up by the State's Health Department to probe the incident, Health Department spokesperson Surjyakanta Mishra said. Action will be taken after the committee submits its report. On Monday, 55-year-old Gauri Chakravarty's son who came to visit her in Sambunath Pandit Hospital found that his mother was in severe pain with black ants swarming around her swollen left eye that was bandaged. A first information report was lodged by her family in the Bhowanipore police station alleging negligence by the hospital staff. Ms. Chakravarty was admitted to the hospital on November 5 with an eye infection following a cornea surgery. According to doctors, she was also suffering from severe diabetes and had been advised to move to another State hospital nearby. Her family has refused to receive the body without a post-mortem examination, and has demanded a judicial probe into the events leading to her death.
