Guru Nanak's birth anniversary

Staff ReporterShyama Rajagopal

KOCHI: The Sikh community celebrated the 536th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the first Guru who founded the religion.

It was festive time at Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha at Perumanoor, where the faithful took part in conducting Prabhat Pheris, Kirtans, Ardas and reading of the Akhand Path Sahib or the Guru Granth, the religious text of the Sikhs.

Children, women and men in a number of groups sang Shabads, the religious hymns. There were also lectures on the Guru's teachings.

The management committee of the Gurudwara had charted programmes from November 9 for the celebrations to be conducted in a traditional manner, said Bunty Singh, a member of the committee. Morning processions, or the Prabhat Pheris, had been taken out for the last few days. Guru Ka Langar, or the community kitchen, was organised by the devotees for the last three days. The message of universal brotherhood and equality, the main idea behind the religion, was propagated by the faithful.
