It is celebration time for those who worked behind the Malayalam movie classic, `Chemmeen'. The 40th anniversary of the film, which won the President's Gold Medal for the best South Indian movie in 1965, is being observed by Amateur Cultures Trivandrum (ACT), city-based drama and film society, at the Senate Hall here on Wednesday. The actors and technicians behind the film would be honoured at the function. The veteran actors, Adoor Bhavani and Adoor Pankajam, who played unforgettable roles in the film, would each be presented with a cheque for Rs.10,000 and a statuette. The highlight is a `Vayalar-Salil Choudhary musical tribute'. As many as 20 singers, including old-time greats K.P. Udayabhanu, Vani Jayaram, Santha P. Nair and Sabitha Choudhary as well as present-day crooners Biju Narayanan and Sreenivas, will render selected songs. The movie, directed by Ramu Kariat, had brought together acting talents of the highest order in Malayalam at that time. Satyan, Madhu, Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair, Sheela and S.P. Pillai were part of the movie cast. The film's resounding success was partly attributed to the lilting songs that hold an undying charm for Malayalees. The songs were rendered by K.J. Jesudas, Mannade, P. Leela, Udayabhanu and Santha P. Nair, among others. Cultural Affairs Minister A.P. Anil Kumar, Mayor Jayan Babu and actors Murali and Gopi will grace the function, which gets under way at 6 p.m.
