Government urged to supersede Belgaum City Corporation

Special Correspondent

GULBARGA: The district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Tuesday urged the State Government to supersede the Belgaum City Corporation and appoint an administrative officer immediately for passing an "anti-Karnataka" resolution in the corporation seeking merger of Marathi-speaking areas of Belgaum, Nippani, Khanapur, Bidar, Bhalki, Karwar and other areas with Maharashtra.

The members of the parishat, led by its president Veerabhadra Simpi, took out a procession and submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh to Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez.

The parishat condemned the Belgaum City Corporation for passing the resolution and reopening the border dispute.

The memorandum defended the action of activists of Kannada Hitarakshana Vedike, who attacked the Belgaum Mayor and his supporters at the Legislators' home in Bangalore as a "spontaneous response" to the action of Mayor in allowing the passage of the resolution. The parishat urged the Government to withdraw cases filed against the activists and release them from prison.

The parishat also urged the Government to arrest those responsible for violence in Belgaum and initiate criminal action against those who burnt the Kannada flag.
