PATNA: Chief Secretary G.S. Kang, Home Secretary H.C. Shirohi, and DGP Ashish Ranjan on Tuesday faced the wrath of police personnel in Jehanabad for suspending SP Sunil Kumar and sparing DM Rana Awadesh for the jailbreak on Sunday last. Governor Buta Singh announced the suspension of the SP at a press conference holding him responsible for the failure to protect the jail despite information of an impending attack by naxalites. The government replaced the IG (Prisons), A.B. Prasad, by Anand Kumar. B.S. Meena takes over the new Jehanabad SP. The Governor, however, ruled out the possibility of his resignation saying that the Opposition parties were indulging in propaganda campaigns because of the current Assembly elections. Police personnel gheraoed the three top officials at the Police Lines, one of the targets of the CPI (Maoist) attack, and the Circuit House protesting the "double standards" adopted in assessing the performance of the SP and the DM and demanded the latter's suspension. They contended that the security of the jail was the responsibility of the DM and not the SP and hence action should have been taken against the former. They charged that the DM was the first official to be informed of the movement of naxalites in the region if one went by the order issued by the IG (Operations), R.R. Prasad, who referred to his talks with Mr. Awadesh.
