Pondicherry: Tar and mud roads in the peripheral pockets of Pondicherry are becoming cement roads as part of the implementation of the MLAs' Area Development Scheme. Within the town limits also the Assembly constituencies present a picture of link roads and side roads becoming cemented with the elected legislators investing the funds available to them under the Area Development scheme. The Union Territory Administration had announced that each legislator would be entitled to take up works every year with an investment of Rs. 1 crore available under the scheme. The legislators earmark on priority the funds for the basic infrastructures. A. Anbalagan the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator representing Uppalam constituency (a coastal pocket) performed the formal ceremony to commence the work for laying of cement roads in Vambakeerapalayam and Dubrayapettai in the constituency. All the roads in these two hamlets would soon have cement roads and the total money being spent for the work comes to Rs. 75 lakhs. The first phase of work involves an expenditure of Rs. 38 lakhs, Mr. Anbalagan said. The work comes under the purview of the Local Administration Department and municipal bodies (which do not have now any elected representatives and are being manned by officials) are executing the work. Among those who were present on the occasion included the Commissioner of Pondicherry Municipality G. Malarkannan , the Special Officer M. Arunachalam and engineers of the technical wing in the municipality.
