Anna varsity constituent colleges in upbeat mood

CHENNAI: The constituent colleges of Anna University are in an upbeat mood over their record in the last three months.

More than 40 students doing their final-year B.E/B.Tech programme in four colleges have landed `dream jobs' in big IT companies.

These students, who are entering the final semester of their course in the College of Engineering, Guindy, the A.C College of Technology, the Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet, and the School of Planning and Architecture, will get an annual pay package of Rs.4.5 lakhs, besides benefits, including stock options, says Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan.

Internship

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, Juno Online, D.E. Shaw India, Intel and Cisco have taken on board at least half-a-dozen students. Some of the recruits need to undergo internship and further evaluation, according to P. Mannar Jawahar, Director, Centre for University Industry Collaboration, that handled the placement.

Continuous Computing India, IVY Comptech and Thorogood will come in the next few weeks with offers of `dream jobs'.

Dr. Viswanathan says the companies prefer candidates from Computer Sciences, Information Technology and Electronics and Communication Engineering, mostly with a cumulative grade point average of 7.2 and above.

In all, 1,500 candidates complete undergraduate courses in the four colleges; of these, 1,200 have already been placed, say university officials.

Dr. Viswanathan says while the university was happy with the placements for its top-notch students, it is concentrating on students of the affiliated colleges, especially those who have completed their courses in April 2005.

Special drive

"We see many of them are looking for jobs still, and that is why we have taken up a special drive, under the Tamil Nadu State-Level Placement Programme, to bring in mass recruiters and thousands of candidates from the colleges to common points in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore.

Infosys, Cognizant Technology and Satyam are some of the companies that are recruiting youngsters from the 2005 batch."

Last week, thousands of students took up a recruitment test conducted by Hewlett Packard.
