SALEM: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said on Tuesday that lack of knowledge about legal procedures among some Electoral Registration Officers "to an extent" delayed the filing of affidavits in connection with the submission of bulk applications with bogus names for inclusion in the electoral rolls. The Election Commission had not set any deadline for the filing of these affidavits, Mr. Guptatold reporters here after a review meeting on the special summary revision of rolls in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Vellore. The preparation of affidavits needed an error-free and diligent door-to-door scrutiny, which was being undertaken in these districts. The EC had laid down a set of stringent guidelines to identify these "bogus" applications. Refusing to divulge details of the number of bulk applications and the parties and organisations that submitted them, he said identification of such applications was almost over, and necessary action was being taken. Efforts were on to publish the electoral rolls before the elections, Mr. Gupta said. Collectors A. Sukumaran (Salem), V.N. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam (Namakkal), Chandrasekaran (Dharmapuri) and S. Gopalakrishnan (Vellore) along with officials attended the meeting.
